Speculating on Diversity
I’m Corinne. I’m a current university student who grew up reading and writing speculative fiction. I’ve been working on a research project that looks at ethnic diversity within the speculative fiction genre (umbrella term for sci-fi and fantasy). It’s a topic I’ve been passionate about for the past couple of years after reading A Song of Ice and Fire triggered the need for it. I didn’t realize the discussion on the need for diverse voices in speculative fiction had been going on for years until a few months ago! The discussion has been gathering steam and I believe that the speculative fiction genre and the publishing industry will be undergoing some serious changes in the near future.
For my research, I have two focuses: One is the experiences of writers of color via the successful Kickstarter campaign and astounding anthology: Long Hidden: Speculative Fiction from the Margins of History edited by Daniel Jose Older and Rose Fox. The second focus of my research is the general opinions of readers of speculative fiction. I put together a reader survey that I need as many people as possible to fill out. The only participant requirement? Be someone who reads or has read speculative fiction. That’s it.
When I’m done collecting my sources, I will organize and release the data (interviews and survey results). I will also have my own analysis for the data. I will also give more of my personal opinion on the topic.
If you have any questions, advice, or simply want to get in touch, please leave a comment or reach out to me. I’ll certainly get back to you.
Let’s start the discussion.
